“Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice.” Nelson Mandela
CARE’s vision is of a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome and all people live in dignity and security. Based on our 70 years of experience, CARE’s 2020 Program Strategy is our guiding approach for how we want to achieve lasting change in the world.
Why? To address the injustice of poverty.
Unequal power relations are at the root of poverty. These result in the unequal division of resources and opportunities between women and men, and rich and poor villages, cities and countries.
We cannot overcome poverty without addressing these issues.
How does CARE work to overcome poverty? It’s a three-prong solution.
- Humanitarian action: CARE helps communities better prepare for potential disasters and provides life-saving assistance after an emergency strikes.
- Promoting lasting change and innovative solutions. This requires finding new ways to build local capacity and empower the most vulnerable, particularly women and girls.
- Multiplying impact: Building on knowledge gained and lessons learned, we seek to make an impact that goes far beyond the communities in which we work.
Our goal: To tackle the underlying causes of poverty and social injustice and bring lasting change to the lives of poor and vulnerable people.
By 2020, CARE and our partners will support 150 million people from the most vulnerable and excluded communities to overcome poverty and social injustice.
