Walk In Her Shoes

What is Walk In Her Shoes?

Women and girls in developing countries walk an average of 10,000 steps every day to collect the basics their families need to survive – water, food and firewood, often in dangerous circumstances and weather conditions. This leaves them little time to get an education or earn an income, locking them into a cycle of poverty.

Walk In Her Shoes is a global movement mobilizing thousands of CARE supporters around the world (including Canada, the UK, the USA and Australia) to walk in solidarity with women and girls in the developing world. It’s a personal challenge to walk 10,000 steps while collecting pledges and raising awareness of CARE’s vital work around the world.

This annual campaign engages individuals, corporations, schools and communities in educational, interactive and fun ways to become locally involved in international development.

Why you should join

How many steps do you walk a day? We encourage you to start tracking now. You might be surprised. Did you know that the average Canadian walks only 4,800 steps a day?

Now imagine needing to walk 10,000 steps a day, just to get water, firewood or other basics for survival. It’s hard to imagine, but you can help change this.

The funds you raise through your walking challenge will help reduce the distance women and girls have to walk by providing clean water and nutritious food close to home and addressing inequalities between women and men so women can spend more time in school, earn an income and help their community overcome poverty.

When and where does it take place?

The timing of the campaign is focused around International Women’s Day (annually on March 8) with the 2017 walk week taking place March 5-11, 2017. Currently events are planned in Ottawa, Calgary, Kelowna and Vancouver. To learn more about the event in your area, please click on the city links above.
