Walk In Her Shoes This March in Ottawa and Keep Momentum Going for Women’s Rights
Feb 2, 2017
(OTTAWA) CARE Canada is calling on Ottawa residents to help keep the momentum going for women’s rights and gender equality this March.
Last month, millions of people across the globe took to the streets in support of gender equality and women’s rights. This included thousands of Ottawa residents who cheerfully waved signs and demonstrated in solidarity with women worldwide.
In advance of International Women’s Day, CARE Canada is asking Ottawa residents to help continue this effort on March 7 with its Walk In Her Shoes event on Parliament Hill.
Women and girls in developing countries must walk an average of 10,000 steps every day to collect the basics their families need to survive – water, food and firewood. This leaves little time to get an education or earn an income. CARE Canada’s Walk In Her Shoes challenge will ask Canadians to walk in solidarity with women worldwide and raise funds to help break the cycle of poverty.
“We know that we cannot overcome poverty until all people – particularly women and girls – have equal rights and opportunities,” says Gillian Barth, president and CEO of CARE Canada. “CARE’s Walk In Her Shoes will be an important reminder that Canadians care about women’s rights and we’re going to continue to push this agenda for women worldwide.”
Part of a Global Effort
They will join participants taking part in similar events happening across the world to mark International Women’s Day and support CARE’s work. This includes Walk In Her Shoes events to be held across the U.S. in March. In England, CARE International UK will also be hosting a special March for Women in Central London.
“This is a critical moment to build on the excitement of the Women’s March and come together to keep the energy alive for women across the world,” says Barth.
Everyone is welcome to join local women and men, boys and girls, federal and municipal politicians, diplomats, and other local VIPs. To learn more, visit: www.care.ca/walk.
