CARE Canada Reaction to Canadian Foreign Minister's Speech

CARE Canada President and CEO Gillian Barth released the following quote in response to today's speech by Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland:

CARE was pleased with Minister Chrystia Freeland’s commitment that in the coming days the government will release Canada’s first feminist international assistance policy, which will target women’s rights and gender equality. We joined thousands of Canadians in contributing to these consultations and are eager to hear the government’s vision to meet these worthy aims.

Respect for international principles and commitments – particularly the Paris climate change agreements and Sustainable Development Goals – will be essential to this strategy. We were glad the Minister reiterated Canada’s support for these initiatives. Canada must be a stalwart defender of these global promises for the world’s poorest people. But bold words are not enough. We look forward to hearing what concrete actions Canada will take to ensure we can improve the lives of women and girls worldwide.
