Empowering generations of women with CARE

As an adult, I’d only ever traveled to Europe. I’d never been to countries where people don't have as much wealth as we do. That is, until my husband passed away. Six months later, the opportunity arose for me to travel to Africa

I jumped at the opportunity. That trip changed my life forever.

No matter what you see on television or read in the news, it doesn’t prepare you for the poverty you see in real life… It’s hard to put into words. My trip to Africa was, and still is, very emotional for me.

As a fellow supporter of CARE Canada, you probably already know what I’m talking about. Unbelievable poverty. Women and children are more affected by poverty and discrimination. The lack of education for girls contributes to early marriage, higher birth rates, and lower income.

I felt horrible and I just thought that it wasn’t right.  After seeing the poverty and the struggles of women firsthand, I realized I needed to do more and that I could do more. That’s when I started to think beyond my annual support, and decided to also leave a gift in my will to CARE Canada.

The empowerment of women has been a deeply-held value of mine. Poverty always comes back to inequality, and I believe CARE is making a real difference. I saw that with my own eyes!

I’m proud to be a CARE supporter and know through a gift in my will I’m leaving a legacy of equity and fairness in this world.

“When I look back on my life, I want to be remembered as someone who created spaces for opportunities. Through supporters like you and me, CARE is providing a different model to the poorest people on the planet.”
