CARE Canada announces executive leadership transition

OTTAWA, July 26, 2019—Following an internal announcement earlier this summer, CARE Canada’s President and CEO Gillian Barth is stepping down as of 2 August 2019 to seek new challenges in her career and to allow for a leadership change at CARE Canada.

“We want to thank Gillian for the nearly three decades of dedicated service to CARE which involved many significant accomplishments and making CARE the success that it is today,” said CARE Canada Board of Directors Chair, Ken Sunquist.

“Gillian began at CARE with a passion to bring clean water and hygiene to rural communities in East Africa and Latin America. Almost 30 years later, she leaves the organization by championing a steadfast commitment to ending poverty by mobilizing women and girls to take charge of their own destinies.”

Ms. Barth served in progressively senior positions in a wide range of development sectors, including water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); environment; monitoring and evaluation; corporate resource and business development; global human resources and knowledge management; and senior external relations and representation. In 2013, Ms. Barth received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal for her tireless work with CARE.

Ms. Barth’s years of dedicated service, her commitment to building a more equal world, and her fearless leadership through times of change were qualities that were noted by CARE Canada headquarters and CARE country office staff alike when she announced her departure.

CARE Canada’s Board of Directors has begun a recruitment process for a new President and CEO. Mara O’Brien James, who currently serves as CARE Canada’s Vice President, People, Culture and Brand, will serve as the interim President and CEO as of 2 August 2019 until the new CEO is identified and in place.
