A dark blue heart with the words One Woman Can inside it

One woman. Infinite impact.

When one woman can access the resources and opportunities she deserves, she can pull not only herself, but others around her out of poverty and crisis. Join us and invest in women around the world.

Together we can make March for women

By Mara O’Brien James, CARE Canada President and CEO (Interim)

Four years ago this January, the first women’s marches exploded around the globe.

Frustration, anger, hope and—most of all—a commitment to a better, more equal world, drove our each and every step as we filled the streets, linked arms with our friends, daughters, husband, sons and complete strangers. For many of us, this was the first time we had seen so many people come together so quickly. Not just in our own cities and towns and neighbourhoods, but around the world. We needed to walk together, we needed to amplify each other’s voices, we needed to show the world that we will not stand for inequality.

So, what’s changed in the last four years? Seemingly small but important things are happening every day. I read about them and you’ve likely read about them too.

Later in 2017, it was a hashtag that read simply #MeToo. In 2018, Yazidi human rights activist Nadia Murad was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize alongside Denis Mukwege “for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict.” A few weeks ago, it was the finally seeing in print the words and stories of a female Canadian athlete who nearly 20 years ago, at the age of 17, was groomed for sex by the powerful male coach who controlled her career. Her words were silenced then, but not anymore…

We have not yet achieved gender equality, no, but how close are we? All I can tell you, is that every single step we take brings us closer. With every move forward, one more woman finds the courage to tell her story; one more family releases their children from the burden of gender stereotypes; one more child sees their full potential as a human being – not just as a boy or as a girl.

#March4Women is CARE’s global campaign to bring people together to end inequality.

We help women and girls in developing countries lift themselves out of poverty and out of crisis because we know that we cannot overcome poverty until all people have equal rights and opportunities.

We also know that people like you believe in the potential that exists inside every single human. And you know that, in an interconnected world, one small change can have a long-lasting impact.

In this spirit, CARE’s March4Women campaign is all about taking action for a more equal world. Whether you march or walk or share your voice, you can ensure that the month of March is for women. Here’s how…

Walk with us
For those residing near the capital, we’ll be joining the 4th annual Ottawa Women’s March to amplify the voices of the women and girls we support around the world. Don’t have anyone to walk with? Want to join a group that exists to achieve equality not just for women and girls in Canada, but around the world? Join CARE Canada staff, friends and supporters as we make #March4Women. The best part? If you sign up to walk with us, we’ll bring you a free, comfy cozy (and highly visible – watch for us!) CARE toque. In Vancouver? Walk In Her Shoes!
Women and girls in developing countries walk an average of seven kilometres every day to collect essentials such as water and food for their families, leaving little time to go to school or earn money. CARE is working to change that. And you can too. CARE’s Walk In Her Shoes event challenges you to walk 10,000 steps in solidarity with women and girls around the world. Ask your friends and family to support your walk and the proceeds will support selected efforts to fight malnutrition in Malawi. It all happens on March 8, 2020 at Creekside Community Centre—we hope you’ll join us! Add your name
Around the world, climate change affects everyone, but not equally. The poorest 1 billion people—the majority of which are women and girls—are responsible for just 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. And yet, when conflict or disaster strikes, women and girls disproportionately face displacement, family separation, and the continual risk of violence.  Women need to be at the table to ensure fairer, more ambitious and more sustainable solutions to the climate crisis. Add your name to our call for climate and gender justice and join other CARE supporters working to make the world more equal. Sign the e-Petition
Once you’ve joined our movement for gender justice, take one more step to make your voice heard by the Government of Canada. Petition e-2395 calls upon the Government of Canada to commit at least 50% of Canada’s public climate finance for developing countries towards adaptation – ways to lower the risks posed by the consequences of climate change. The petition also calls for at least 15% of Canada’s public climate finance be directed towards projects that target gender equality as a primary objective.

Every step we take matters. With your support, we can make #March4Women. Join us today.
