CARE Canada and Government of Canada Announce Funding for SHE SOARS Project

Following Minister Harjit Sajjan’s announcement of 11 Health & Rights projects, funded by Global Affairs Canada, CARE confirms support to advance health-related rights for out-of-school adolescent girls in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia.

OTTAWA, 24 NOVEMBER 2021 – CARE, Restless Development, the Youth Coalition for Sexual and Reproductive Rights, and the Center for Reproductive Rights, are thrilled to announce a new initiative entitled “Sexual and Reproductive Health and Economic Empowerment Supporting Out-of-School Adolescent Girls’ Rights and Skills” (SHE SOARS).

This $45M CAD project, generously funded by the Government of Canada, will improve access to high-quality, evidence-based sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services for adolescent girls, especially out-of-school adolescent girls. Through this initiative, project participants will be able to access services more easily and to exercise their sexual and reproductive health rights over the next seven years.

SHE SOARS will engage with and fund local women’s rights and youth-led groups. It will train health providers, and work with government ministries to create sustainable change in the social, economic, and legal environments that impact out-of-school adolescent girls in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia.

This program strongly aligns with CARE Canada’s vision and mission to unlock women’s leadership for a more equal world and will work to create safe and enabling environments for women and girls to access sexual and reproductive health services.

SHE SOARS includes advocacy activities, comprehensive sexual health education and family planning, and will work with men, boys, and community leaders to support adolescents to have greater options and decision-making about their own lives. The project will have a transformative impact on the lives of over 200,000 out-of-school adolescent girls.

By working together with local communities, SHE SOARS will support out-of-school adolescent girls as they choose their own path in life, lead in their communities, and soar towards their dreams.
