CARE Canada and the Government of Canada announce funding for new CARE project to address the growing crisis in the Horn of Africa

OTTAWA, 11 MAY 2022 – CARE Canada is excited to announce a new pilot program that aims to bridge the work between humanitarian and development projects towards more sustainable outcomes. One of the first of its type, the nexus project Lifesaving Health, WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) and Protection Assistance for Crisis-affected IDPs and Host Communities in the Eastern Zone of Tigray Region will help to bridge the crossover between humanitarian and development programming towards more sustainable outcomes.

This $4 million project, generously funded by the Government of Canada, focuses on gender responsiveness, improving gender equality, and enabling equal access to health. This project will provide urgently needed and immediate assistance to people affected by conflict in the region.

To better address the causes of gender inequality, the project will implement CARE’s flagship community-led approach to move gender transformation forward called Social Analysis and Action. This approach will challenge social norms, beliefs, and practices that impact the daily lives and health of participants.

The project is also designed to ensure equitable access to essential primary health care and access to safe water supply, sanitation facilities, and hygiene supplies for women, men, girls, and boys in Eastern Tigray and Ethiopia.

Mobile health and nutrition teams will ensure gender balanced access to provide treatment for common acute illnesses and to raise public awareness on disease control and childcare practices. This project will benefit 65,000 individuals in the region, half of whom are women and girls, strongly aligning with CARE Canada’s mission to create a more equal world for women and girls.
