CARE Canada pays tribute to former chair and prominent Canadian, Kenneth Sunquist

OTTAWA, 9 JUNE 2022 – CARE Canada’s former board chair Ken Sunquist passed away yesterday morning after a courageous battle with cancer.

Ken was an incredible person who dedicated his career to serving the country and in retirement to supporting CARE and the work we do. He was a true advocate for CARE’s mission and cared deeply for the people we work with around the world.

For board members and staff alike, Ken was a constant presence to the CARE family for more than a decade. As a Board member and as Chair, he worked tirelessly in service of CARE’s mandate and served it in many capacities. Most notably:

  • CARE Canada Board from 2010-2020 (including serving as Chair), as well as serving on several committees
  • CARE International Governance & Nominating Committee
  • Yayasan CARE Peduli Board of Patrons, the national CARE entity in Indonesia

Ken was particularly instrumental in transforming CARE Indonesia to a CARE Member, allowing CARE Canada to lead in CARE’s localization efforts in the early days of this organizational change. He was supportive of new leaders, of those experiencing difficulties in their lives, and of all those who cared about the mission of CARE Canada.

Irrespective of his role, Ken always went the extra mile and was deeply interested in our team and their work. He would always try to connect to team members on a personal level and engage in in-depth conversations.

It is with a heavy heart that we are saying goodbye to an extraordinary man. We will miss Ken deeply and CARE is offering his family and those who knew him well our deepest condolences.
