Food Sufficiency for Farmers (FSF) Project
Ethiopia has made significant progress over the past few years, with the rural poverty rate declining from 45 per cent in 2000 to 29 per cent in 2012 (Ethiopia MDG Report, 2012). However, it is still one of the poorest countries in the world, ranked 173 out of 187 countries on the Human Development Index.
Eighty-four per cent of all households are located in rural areas and many remain chronically food insecure and are extremely vulnerable to shocks and natural disasters. The decline in rural poverty has been largely attributed to food security and anti-poverty programs.
What CARE is Doing:
The Food Sufficiency for Farmers project is in place to increase access to healthy food for families in Ethiopia. Specifically, the overall objectives of the FSF project are:
- Foster an enabling environment to increase access to healthy food for chronically food insecure households
- Implement expanded economic activities for chronically food insecure households
- Improve resilience of households and their communities to climate risks and other forms of disasters
The FSF project is being implemented by CARE Canada and CARE Ethiopia in partnership with the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (GFDRE). The project is financially supported by the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada. FSF will complement other development initiatives of CARE International in Ethiopia related to women’s empowerment, economic development and climate change resilience. The project will be implemented in 11 districts across three zones: West and East Hararghe and South Gondar.
- 42,887 Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP)-supported households who will receive extension services and tailored capacity building
- Of the over 42,000 household, 5,000 female-headed expected to graduate independence from the PSNP
