Other types of planned gifts

Your legacy of fighting poverty and injustice around the world will make a difference for generations to come.

Your legacy gift can take many different forms, and although bequests in Wills in the most common, these other vehicles are growing in popularity and might be right for you.

Please note that this information is general in nature and does not constitute legacy or financial advice. We encourage you to consult with your financial and/or legal advisors prior to making your decision.

A gift of life insurance

Smaller, regular premium payments make this an affordable way to make a significant gift to CARE Canada. When CARE Canada is the beneficiary of your life insurance policy, this gift can help offset the tax burden of your estate, therefore leaving more to your heirs.

Gifts of life insurance can be made in three ways:

  1. Change a current life insurance policy by naming CARE Canada as the beneficiary. In this case, your estate will receive a charitable tax receipt when the proceeds are paid out to CARE Canada.
  2. Transfer ownership of an existing policy to CARE Canada today. You will receive a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of your policy.
  3. Purchase a new life insurance policy and name CARE Canada as the owner and beneficiary. In this case, the premiums you pay qualify for a charitable tax receipt.

A gift of RRSPs and RRIFs

Naming a charity as a beneficiary of your registered retirement savings plan or retirement income fund is impactful and easy to do. Simply contact the financial institution management of your retirement plan and sign a “beneficiary form” declaration naming CARE Canada as the beneficiary of the plan.

You can name CARE Canada as the primary beneficiary or secondary beneficiary in case the primary recipient passes before you. Naming a charitable beneficiary does not affect your own use of the retirement funds in any way. The after-tax amount of funds remaining in the account after your passing will support the life-changing work done by CARE Canada, and your estate will receive a charitable donation tax receipt for the total amount of the donation.
