Lebanon Crisis in photos: CARE’s teams in action

CARE is working on the ground in Lebanon to provide emergency relief services for those affected by the large explosion in Beirut that occurred on August 4th. The devastation and shattered buildings seen here were photographed on August 7, 2020.

On August 4, 2020 a massive explosion devastated the city of Beirut, Lebanon. Hundreds of people were killed, 6000 injured, and over 300,000 have lost their homes.

CARE staff on the ground report that there are thousands of people sleeping in the streets, with search and rescue missions still ongoing.

Just hours after the explosions, CARE’s teams began mobilizing with a range of experts from shelter to social workers ready to respond. CARE International was one of first international organizations to begin vital aid assistance to those affected by the Beirut blast as the death toll continues to rise.

On August 7, 2020, CARE, in coordination with local partners, began distributing food packages and hot meals to help those who are struggling most in the aftermath of the blast such as women and girls who make up around 60% of those affected.

CARE is working with local partners to focus on immediate life-saving aid in the form or food parcels, cash, psycho-social support, and hygiene materials CARE is working on the ground in Lebanon to provide emergency relief services for those affected by the large explosion in Beirut that occurred on August 4th.

CARE Lebanon began distributing food parcels through three local organizations in the Achrafieh district of Beirut. Food parcels include foodstuffs such as hummus, rice, and tahini.

CARE staff and local partners have also been providing hot meals to those who have been impacted by the explosions.

CARE will also work towards longer-term assistance through shelter rehabilitation, technical support and cash assistance, long-term psycho-social support and resources to help protect against gender-based violence, which can increase after a crisis such as this as tensions increase and thousands are living in temporary and unprotected shelters.

The people of Lebanon are strong and resilient. People are coming together to help each other during this incredibly difficult time. But they need our support.
