OTTAWA, 23 SEPTEMBER 2020 – Canadians are keenly aware of the role that poverty, gender inequality and racial injustice play in determining who is on the frontlines of the fight against COVID-19, and who will be hit hardest by its social and economic impacts.
As COVID-19 pushes hunger, gender-based violence and economic exclusion to new highs in Canada and around the world, bold new measures are needed to tackle the systemic weaknesses the pandemic has exposed, and to prepare for future shocks – whether from health crises, economic decline or the climate crisis.
Today’s Speech from the Throne provided an opportunity for the Government of Canada to outline for all of us as Canadians, the steps it plans to take to anchor Canada’s pathway out of the crisis within an inclusive, green and global recovery.
CARE Canada applauds the Throne Speech’s recognition that the COVID-19 pandemic does not end in Canada until it ends everywhere, and welcomes the government’s commitment to invest more in international development, to support people’s resilience, and to ensure equitable access to vaccines for people worldwide.
We look forward to learning the details of these initiatives through the upcoming fiscal update and relevant ministers’ mandate letters, and stand ready to work with the Government of Canada to shape and implement its new agenda in the weeks and months ahead.
