CARE Canada statement: Welcoming Newly Appointed Canadian Minister of International Development

OTTAWA, 27 JULY 2023 – CARE Canada is pleased to congratulate the newly appointed Minister of International Development, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, who stepped into the role in yesterday’s cabinet shuffle. CARE Canada looks forward to working closely with Minister Hussen and engaging his expertise in human rights and previous experiences to continue to advance Canada’s international development work.

In recent years, CARE Canada’s policy engagement with the Government of Canada has centered on supporting the Government’s leadership in responding to global food and hunger crisis, climate and humanitarian emergencies with women at the centre. Throughout this work, CARE Canada has consistently underscored the pivotal role of sexual and reproductive health and rights in protecting women’s rights and dignity in crisis contexts. We put gender equality, agency and participation at the center of all efforts to protect the rights and dignity of the people at the heart of the work.

As a civil society partner of the government, CARE Canada shall continue to demonstrate the impact, leadership, reach, scale and innovation of its work across the world. Together with our Canadian civil society colleagues, we will continue to advocate for Canada to increase the official development assistance envelope for a more robust Canadian response to global humanitarian crises, while sowing the seeds for sustainable development that leaves no one behind. Our organization looks forward to continuing this close collaboration with the Minister’s office on these critical priorities.

CARE Canada also would like to extend many thanks to the outgoing Honourable Harjit Singh Sajjan and wish him all the best in his new position as President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada.
