Safe spaces 101

What are safe spaces?

While it might sound straightforward, there are many factors to consider when creating safe spaces for women and girls.

Safe spaces are places where women and girls are physically and emotionally safe, free from violence, fear and harassment. Here, women can socialize and build connections, support each other, gain skills and access care—whether it be health, legal, psychological or mental support.

Women and girls’ safe spaces (WGSS) both prevent and respond to violence against women. They can also provide opportunities for women and girls to develop leadership skills and have a say in making decisions that affect them.

These spaces are accessible regardless of age, ability, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, economic status or education level. They are run exclusively by women and girls.

WGSS have proved to be an effective tool to meet humanitarian needs, promote gender equality, and keep more people safe in an emergency.
