Crisis in East Africa

The situation

The combination of conflict, climate change and widespread hunger is causing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in East Africa.

In Sudan, violence has impacted millions, forcing people to flee their homes into neighbouring countries, like Chad and Egypt.

Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are experiencing severe drought. More than 23 million people cannot access food and water, leading to a dire hunger crisis.

As is the case in any emergency, women’s and children’s health and safety are most at-risk.

Your support is urgently needed to help people affected by conflict, climate change and hunger in East Africa.

How we are responding

The safety and security of civilians and staff is CARE’s first priority. Staff are committed to providing essential services and assistance to the most affected and are working in extremely difficult contexts.

In Sudan, CARE has provided essential and lifesaving assistance since the start of the current conflict.

CARE and our partners are providing water, health, nutrition and sanitation services to people in need across the country. As always, we place a particularfocus on supporting women and girls.

CARE’s office and team in Chad is already present on the ground alongside other partners such as UNHCR (the United Nations Refugee Agency) to provide support to those fleeing Sudan.

CARE works throughout East Africa to provide emergency support, such as food, water, shelter, hygiene, health services, cash assistance and prevention of gender-based violence. We also support long-term development projects that help families withstand further crises. CARE and our partners work to:

  • Save lives now: Provide immediate, vital food supplies and cash vouchers, access to job opportunities, and prevent life-threatening malnutrition.
  • Grow food and resilience: Support people with more efficient farming practices, fertilizer alternatives, and safer food storage to ensure there is a next harvest.
  • Change food systems through advocacy: Work with private sector partners and donors to advocate with governments to prevent more crises.
